Ubiquitous Computing in Finland

The situation of ubicomp seems to be quite active in Finland. According to the Academy of Finland 73 plans under ubiquitous computing and diversity of communication were submitted in January 2008 and 37 got full applications.

Doorman
This system is build by Speech-based and Pervasive Interaction group. It all started in a project called User Interfaces for Ubiquitous Computing which was funded by was the Academy of Finland. Doorman is currently located in the premises of the University of Tampere in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences TAUCHI-unit.

Doorman´s purpose is to offer an intuitive and simple-to-use communication environment. It will be made contextaware and adaptable. Primary interaction modality is speech, but EMFi will also be used as weight sensors and speakers. This system is created in order to relieve staff from disturbing routine tasks (for example opening the door and guiding the visitors) and to offer aid to the communication between the users (telephone calls, e-mail) despite their locations.

Finland Launches Ubiquitous Computing Program
Tekes (The Finnish National Technology Agency) has launched a 294 million euro program on embedded systems technology in 2007. Behind this is the country´s goal of improving international competitiveness; helping the information and communication technology industry to accelerate the commercialization of new technologies, and increase the level of research in the field, is a way to this according to CORDIS (Community Research & Development Information Service).

The program is about developing and piloting embedded systems solutions which are designed to make everyday life easier. Healthcare, entertainment and environmental sectors will benefit the most from the new applications.

Ubiquitous Computing Cluster Program in Finland
This program is a part of the national Finnish Center of Expertise Program which has a national objective of creating a long-term strategy for the full utilization of the top-level expertise in the regions. The program and the center are expected to offer better means to create internationally competitive and attractive innovation environments with the other actors in the innovation system.
